Batman Villains Unite!
August 17th 2006 05:23
Well, it looks like the new Batman sequel is gearing up for some big multi-villain action. I don't know whether this is a good thing or not... I think Batman Begins would've been perfect had it just concentrated on one villain, and the way the next film is shaping up it looks like it will feature three major villains from the franchise, so I dunno ay...
Heath Ledger has signed up to play The Joker, which I think is interesting casting and could possibly be very inspired. Not everyone else is convinced, but I like Ledger a lot and I can't wait to see how he does it.
Philip Seymour Hoffman, last year's Oscar winner and all-round astounding character actor, is apparently in talks to play The Penguin. Now, this would be excellent casting, but The Penguin and The Joker in one film? How are they going to give either any decent screen time, especially when such talent is being employed to play them.
Now, on top of this, Ryan Phillipe is shaping up to play Two-Face! There's not enough room I tells ya! You can't have Two-Face, The Joker and The Penguin all in the one film... it'll be ridiculous and fanwanky. I don't think I really approve of Phillipe's involvement either, normally I'd give him a chance, but not if they're overegging this film so much.
Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are all set to return from the first film too. It will apparently be called 'The Dark Knight'... which is very cool, but I'll be surprised if the studios release it as that without using the word 'Batman' in the title somewhere. They can be narky about things like that.
Here's hoping Christopher Nolan strikes gold again, I think Batman Begins is the best Batman film we've been given so far, let's see if he can take it even further.

Film & TV on DVD
As for Heath ledger the only time hes been good is in Monsters Ball and thats mainly because of his limited screen time. I liked Brokeback Mountain despite him and his James Dean impersonation.
For the Joker, i would have loved to have seen Johnny Depp in the role. I mean look at the menace he created with Wonka. part of me thinks that Robert Downey Jnr was born to be The Joker
Ryan Phillippe, oh no. I mean he neary destroyed Way of The Gun with that silly accent that came and went. He was alright in Igby Goes Down. Retarded choice for Two Face.
Clive Owen is the first name I think of for Two Face. he can go from charm to villian like few Ive seen.

There are plenty of great choices for the Joker that I've heard lately (funnily enough, Depp never occured to me but he wouldn't been great too)... John C. McGinley from Scrubs, Crispin Glover (he's weird and creepy enough) and Mark Hamill (who did the Joker's voice in the animated series) are all interesting names I've heard bandied about recently.

Here's my question - WHAT WAS THE POINT OF BATMAN, BATMAN RETURNS, AND BATMAN FOREVER!?
Why can't they come up with some new characters and make more movies with that idea? I'm sure DC has made other villians that Batman can conquer?
Let Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Tommy Lee Jones and Val Kilmer be who they are. They have forever been characterized as the villians from Batman. Let them be those characters, and create some new ones.
Batman will NEVER go out of style. Create new guys for the newer generations.

Let the previous characters be who they are, and forever be portrayed that way.
