Blakes 7 - Deliverance
March 5th 2007 11:31
An excellent episode. This penultimate episode of series 1 gears up for (what I suspect will be) a big finish… a few separate storylines are set up, and we see things on a bigger scale than usual.
For once, Blake doesn’t go down to a planet for a mission – instead Avon is sent down to lead the charge. This time the Liberator crew witness a ship crash and seek to rescue the mysterious survivors. Once on the surface of the planet, Avon and co. find one survivor and return to the ship… back on the Liberator though it appears that Jenna hasn’t returned and so Avon, Gan and Villa go back down to look for her.
Back on the ship however, the survivor wakes up and holds Cally hostage, forcing Blake to take him to his original destination – a planet where his father has been working a top secret machine, Orac. It transpires that the survivor has made a deal with the Federation – selling this machine to them for money and urgent medication for his father.
Meanwhile on the planet, Jenna has been captured by the primitive people who live on the there, and Avon is mistaken for a deity by a quasi-religious one-woman sect that guards a space-rocket full of genetic information (reference is made to the episode Time Squad).
Anyway, all sorts of stuff happens in this episode… there’s a big space-opera feel to it as we watch all these various storylines weave in and out of each other. We also see Travis and Servalan again… orchestrating from behind the scenes, setting into motion their own plans for the mysterious Orac. It transpires that Travis has been suspended from his command for his failure to capture Blake and the Liberator, and Servalan proves herself to be quite ruthless in her dealings with the creators of Orac… even to the point of making Travis (of all people) seem more human!
PS. Amusingly, there is also a scene where Blake and Cally are killing time waiting for Avon to return from the planet. Blake looks very bored whilst Cally funks out to some groovy tunes on an old-school looking walkman.
Some quotes...
BLAKE: Sure you want to go down?
AVON: Are you afraid that I’ll be able to cope with it better than you?
BLAKE: (Laughs) No.
AVON: Well, perhaps you ought to be.
AVON: Villa, you are hardly the stuff that Gods are made of.
VILLA: And you are, I suppose?
AVON: Apparently.
BLAKE: You’ll get tired. The pain will start eating into you. Sooner or later you’ll lose concentration – and then we’ll take you.
VILLA: There’s hordes of them – and they don’t seem to like us very much!
