Blakes 7 - Duel
February 14th 2007 13:57
'Duel' sees Travis catch up with Blake, and this episode is exactly what the title implies it is… a duel between these two sworn enemies.
Blake and co. are investigating a planet, a site for an extinct civilisation on which two rather godlike beings exist. These two women talk in that typically mysterious way that all-knowing alien entities in sci-fi television love to talk. Meanwhile, Travis and his mutoid army (modified vampire-like soldiers) catch up with the Liberator and engage the ship in the battle. As this battles comes to a head, Travis and Blake are transported down to the planet by the godlike chicks, who inform them that their own civilisation perished in war and their mission is to now educate others who seem to be heading that way. Strangely, education involves stranding Travis and Blake in a forest and encouraging them to kill one another, whilst the crews of their respective ships watch them onscreen.
This was a faintly silly and surreal episode. The motives of the aliens are a little muddled and the whole thing just seemed like an excuse to get Travis and Blake to do battle with each other hand-to-hand. That said though, this sequence towards the end of the episode, where the two enemies are forced to face off with one another in an alien forest, was pretty good and it was nice to see some further development of Travis, who no doubt will return again to continue his vendetta against Blake. The space battle between the ships was interesting too, showing things from a more realistic and strategic point of view than usual sci-fi fare, as opposed to just showing two spaceships shooting at each other.
Some quotes…
AVON: It’s just a machine, Blake.
VILLA: He should know.
GAN: Well, Avon is the expert.
VILLA: That’s not what I meant.
AVON: He was calling me a machine, and since he would undoubtedly consider himself a human being, I shall take that more as a compliment than anything else.
BLAKE: Try and stay alert.
VILLA: Of course I will, how can you doubt me?
BLAKE: It isn’t easy, but somehow I manage it.
GAN: (watching Travis on the screen) He seems to be working to a plan.
VILLA: I wish we were.
GIROC: Tell us, what is your dispute?
TRAVIS: I have told you – this man is an enemy of the federation, tried and convicted. I must bring him back to justice or kill him.
GIROC: (to Blake) You?
BLAKE: I am an enemy of the federation. But it is corrupt and oppressive. I will destroy it.
VILLA: Have you thought of another plan?
AVON: Yes, I’m going to get some sleep.
VILLA: How can you sleep with all this happening?
AVON: With all what happening? Blake is sitting up in a tree, Travis is sitting up in a another tree. Unless they’re planning to throw nuts at one another I don’t’ see much of a fight developing before it gets light.
