Blakes 7 - Mission to Destiny
February 12th 2007 08:43
Well, it looks like the Federation isn't hot back on Blake's trail right away... following on from the last episode we have ourselves a nice little murder mystery for the crew of the Liberator to lend a hand to.
The Ortega is a small little ship that seems to be doing cartwheels in space when the Liberator comes across it. Naturally, Blake goes aboard to investigate and he and the others find that the crew have been put asleep by gas and that the control systems have been deliberately smashed. After reviving the Ortega's crew they find out that they are from the planet Destiny, a non-Federation colony world located at the edge of the galaxy. The Ortega's mission was to collect an extremely valuable vial of substance known as 'neutrotope', a rare energy-boosting source which the Destiny colonists hope will rid their world of a devastating parasitic fungus. The only problem is, the substance is so valuable that one of the Ortega's crew is prepared to kill for it...
What follows is the usual Agatha Christie-style murder-mystery-in-space that a lot of sci-fi shows like to trundle out for an episode or two. This isn't a terrible episode - there were a suitable number of red herrings to keep things interesting - but overall it didn't do a lot for me. The surprise last few seconds also showed Blake to be a little more callous then I've become accustomed to in the last few episodes... I don't know if this was a lapse in writing on Terry Nation's part or if it's a precursor of things to come, but either way it was a little odd.
Also, good to see Blake's trusty red esky make another appearance!
Some quotes...
VILLA: Mock if you like, but I can always sense danger.
GAN: Yes, even when there isn't any.
CALLY: My people have a saying, "A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken".
AVON: Life expectency must be fairly short amongst your people.
AVON: It's frequently easier to be honest if you have nothing to lose.
BLAKE: Have the locators detected the storm yet?
VILLA: No. Yes. No. Maybe.
BLAKE: Which is it, Villa?
VILLA: It's maybe.
AVON: (After punching a woman in the head) You better get her out of here, I really rather enjoyed that.
