Borat!

December 5th 2006 06:46

Well, I finally got around to seeing the Borat film on the weekend.

Fuck me dead if it wasn't the funniest thing I've seen in ages. I laughed so hard and so much that I thought my whole body was going to explode.

It wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The film itself is an ingenious mix of the real and fictionalised... several staged sequences are used to link the various sketches together and to give the film a coherent narrative. Eventually the line between fiction and reality becomes so blurred that it doesn't seem to matter anymore, especially when you're laughing so hard.

Some of it's so wrong... Borat shows some fairly explicit pictures of his naked son to an etiquette coach, wrestles naked with an overweight and extremely hairy man in public, and makes countless jokes about jews, incest and retards. That anyone believed this was a real Kazakh journalist at all seems incredibly unbelievable - but then again, we have hindsight to thank for our own perceptions of this crazed comic creation.

The film itself must hold some kind of record for incurring the most attempted lawsuits. Among those who have attempted or are attempting to sue the filmmakers are...

- The Romanian villagers who doubled for Borat's Kazakh countrymen.
- The university students who picked up a hitchhiking Borat and proceeded to make some fairly suspect comments.
- Cindy Streit, the etiquette expert who gave advice to Borat before he went and had dinner with some southern socialites.

- The Kazakh Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Other examples of fallout from the film include...

- The news producer of the television network Borat appears on was fired after Borat's shenanigans on air.
- The Kazakh government has bemoaned the films existence constantly since it's trailers appeared. They haven't banned the film, but have asked it's distributors not to distribute it in their area of central asia.
- A European/Roma Anti-Discrimination group filed complaints in Germany against the film, believing it's various comments about gypsies to be defammatory and an incitement to riot.
- It will most likely be banned in both Russia and the United Arab Emrites, following recommendations by their respective censor boards.
- Pamela Anderson's husband, Kid Rock, told her she had allowed herself to be made a fool of, following a screening of the film. It appears this comment has led to their filing for divorce!

Loved it as well.. I think some people were expecting a gem of subtle irony, but Borat is everything I expected.
