Clerks 2 trailer
August 11th 2006 06:58
I can't say I'm filled with anticipation with the idea of a sequel to Clerks. Clerks may still be Kevin Smith's best film, and I fear that a sequel could suck out the director's last remaining shreds of credibility.
So 'Jersey Girl'... it really sucked, right? I can't help but feel this is Smith trying to desperately to get back to where he was a few years ago. Even 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back', whilst very funny, was a step in the wrong direction for Smith. His superior work still remains his Jersey trilogy - 'Clerks', 'Mallrats' and 'Chasing Amy', but I'm not sure if he can go back to making these kind of films.
Back when those films were coming out I would've been happy to see 'Clerks 2'. Smith even promised it once or twice at the end of some of the film credits (Smith has a habit of leaving a little message at the end of his film credits along the lines of 'Jay and Silent Bob will return in... [enter film title]'), but alas it never came. And now when his career seems to be at a make or break point, he finally returns to his indie roots. So I'm cynical, what are you gonna do?
The trailer above had a few funny moments, but I think there's a reason why the two leads from Clerks didn't make any substantial reappearances in other Smith films, and that's because they can be a bit amateurish at times. A couple of the line deliveries from them in the trailer seem a bit off, but I'm holding out hope that Smith has made this film in keeping with the feel of the original so that the performances don't feel in any way forced. Here's hoping for an overall return to form for Kevin Smith.
