Degrassi

September 19th 2006 10:43

As if Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High aren't the greatest shows ever! I used to watch these shows religiously when I was a kid and I was over the proverbial moon when all the episodes started getting released on DVD just recently. Suffice to say, I snapped them all up and watched them in no time.

And now I am sad because I have no more Degrassi to watch.

Here's a quick run down of Canada's greatest export...

Degrassi started out as a continuation of the show 'Kids of Degrassi Street'... 'Kids of Degrassi' was a slightly-educational drama show about a bunch of kids in primary school. It didn't feature the same characters as the other Degrassi shows, but it featured some of the same actors and had the same intent - to explore serious themes in an entertaining and dramatic manner.

'Degrassi Junior High' focused on two grades of students at a junior high school, there are a lot of characters - enabling the writers to focus on a wide range of issues without subjecting any one character to an unbelievable amount of baggage. This show ran for three seasons in 1987 and 1988.

'Degrassi High' then continued the story onwards with many of the same characters and actors for two seasons from 1989 to 1991. Whereas 'Degrassi Junior High' dealt with serious issues such as bullying, teenage pregnancy, divorce, broken homes, abuse and wet dreams, 'Degrassi High' upped the stakes a bit - throwing in some AIDs, suicide and abortion.

The show was capped off in 1991 by a movie-length follow up called 'School's Out'.

The show was also recently revived as 'Degrassi: The Next Generation', which is about to start it's 6th season this year. It features a couple of grown-up characters from the original series of Degrassi.

I'm yet to see the new version of Degrassi, so I can't really comment on it. But I absolutely love the classic series to pieces. Joey Jeremiah is one of the greatest characters ever... some of the acting is surprisingly good for a bunch of kids too. It's a shame that the actor who played Joey can now be found hawking Degrassi memorabilia on eBay.

"Degrassi: The Next Generation" has been running since 2001, and rocks on many, many levels. In Fall 2007 it will start appearing daily in worldwide syndication. The new kids exhibit varying degrees of talent and skill like in the old series. One of them, Adamo Ruggiero, is quite gifted, IMHO. He will turn 21 this year. If he can establish and sustain an ongoing career he has the potential to be one of the great actors of his generation -- NO EXAGERATION.

Pat Mastroianni plays adult Joey in D:TNG. Joey has grown up to be a sympathetic everyman. He owns a struggling car dealership, and becomes a father to his young daughter's half-brother Craig. Craig has been abused and is bipolar, but otherwise throughly charming. Fine, fine work Pat does, especially in season 4 when he must deal with Craig going over the edge. Adult Stacey Mistysyn as Caitlin is there as his love interest. Adult "Snake," Stefan Brogren, has become Degrassi's most popular teacher, and adult "Spike" Amanda Stepto and he are a couple in the new series. Spike's daughter Emma, born in the old series, is the central student of the new series.

Re hawking stuff online: in 2000 Pat auctioned off a lot of his personal Degrassi memorabilia to selflessly raise money for MS research. If he is still selling stuff, whether for charity or profit, why not as long as it's good stuff?

If you mean it's too bad he doesn't have a huge mega-career beyond Degrassi, well, yeah, that would be nice. I hope he and the other actors get a fair piece of the DVD sales and syndication sales. I get the impression the Degrassi folk are a breed apart -- that the original stars are forever identified with the characters they played.

We hear Pat after Degrassi helped out with his father's carting and snow-removal business between acting jobs. I think that's great. He's a down-to-earth guy. Degrassi was a cooperative enterprise, not a star-maker machine.

He's still a very young man and superbly talented. Give him a little time.

Thank you for all those details, I do intend to watch the D: TNG sometime in the near future. I agree about the actors having trouble breaking away from the characters they've been identified with - Pat had a natural charm that shone through the screen, it would've been great to see him become a more well-known actor post-Degrassi.
