Doctor Who - Redesign a Monster!
January 15th 2007 10:44
I've been hanging out on a Doctor Who messageboard recently (yes, incredibly nerdy I know, but it's a disease and I can't help it) and there have been some threads on there where Doctor Who fans post their art. One rather inventive thread, partly inspired by the recent new look Cybermen in the new series (see background of this blog!), posed a challenge to artistic Doctor Who fans... if you could redesign any classic monster from old episodes of Doctor Who, how would you do it?
Anyway, one particular artist (Neil Sims) did some fantastic work with his redesigns, so (with his kind permission) I'm going to post them here...
Menoptra
A race of butterfly-like people from the planet Vortis, featured in the 1964 story 'The Web Planet'
Axons
Featured in the 1971 story 'The Claws of Axos'... both forms below.
Drashig
A monstrous dragon/worm-like creature from the 1973 story 'Carnival of Monsters'. Original picture from shillpages.com (a cool resource for Doctor Who and other pictures).
The Black Guardian
Doctor Who villain portrayed by Valentine Dyall in the 1977 story 'The Armageddon Factor' and in the 1983 stories, 'Mawdryn Undead', 'Terminus' and 'Enlightenment'.
Silurian and Sea Devils
Classic Doctor Who monsters from the 1970 story 'The Silurians' and 1972 story 'The Sea Devils'. They both also appeared in the 1983 story 'Warriors of the Deep'.
Nimon
The rather-crappy looking monsters from the 1978 story 'The Horns of Nimon'. They're meant to be reminiscent of the Minotaur. Needless to say, the production of this Doctor Who story was hampered by budget problems and a BBC strike.
Mandrel
Featured in the 1978 story 'The Nightmare of Eden'. This redesign is probably my favourite.
Sutekh
Classic villain from the 1975 story 'Pyramids of Mars'. Another great redesign.
And that's it for the moment.
