Doctor Who - New DVD

August 21st 2006 07:08
Doctor Who

The second batch of episodes from the latest series of Doctor Who has just been released in Australia, hot on the back of their recent broadcast on the ABC.

This DVD features the episodes 'Tooth and Claw', 'School Reunion' and 'The Girl in the Fireplace', which are probably some of the best episodes in this current series.

'Tooth and Claw' is a great traditional-styled story that sees the Doctor and Rose land in 19th century Scotland. They team up with Queen Victoria to fight a vicious alien Werewolf (impressively created through body-motion capture technology and CGI) and let's just say, the Queen is not amused! This is a really good episode and lays the foundations for some of the recurring themes of this series. The rapport between the Doctor and Rose here features some of the best banter of the season, and David Tennant gets to use his real accent too.

'School Reunion' is the episode that a lot of fans were waiting for with baited breath, seeing as it featured the return of Sarah Jane Smith and K9. And, as if that wasn't enough to get our attention, it also features Anthony Stewart Head as the villain of the piece. The return of Sarah is particularly well-handled and is actually used to explore some new territory in Doctor Who - ie. the nature of his relationship with his 'companions', and what happens to them when he parts ways with them. All in all, this is another strong episode.

'Girl in the Fireplace'... well, this is probably my favourite episode of the series. Written by Steven Moffatt (Press Gang, Coupling) and featuring Sophia Myles (Underworld, Tristan and Isolde, Thunderbirds, From Hell), this is a very rewatchable episode. The Doctor and co. find themselves on what appears to be an abandoned ship in the future... a ship that is filled with doorways that all lead to 18th century France. It features some tricky jumps through time, some cool clockwork robots, and more than a few surprises. I can't express how well this episode is written other than: Steven Moffatt needs to write more Doctor Who!

So there you go, if you're a fan of Doctor Who at all than this DVD is a must-have. If you're not a fan of Doctor Who and have read this far than I couldn't reccomend any other Doctor Who DVD that would be more suitable to watch if you want to check out the latest series of the best television show ever!
