Gettin' Square

One of the best Australian films of 2003, and easily the best Australian film I've seen in ages. The story is tight (though it perhaps borrows a little too much from a film I won't name [in fear of spoiling either], narratively-speaking), the characters and performances are an absolute cack to behold, and the direction is punchy and to-the-point.
I hate re-iterating plots in reviews, it seems so pointless and irrelevant, but I'll give a quick rundown nonetheless. Barry (Worthington) is an ex-con looking to go straight... he runs into his old junkie inmate, Spit (Wenham), and all sorts of setups and plans kick into action from there, including those from retired criminals (Spall), Gold Coast crime bosses (Gary Sweet, loving every minute of it), internal affairs and crooked cops (David Field, dead on sight as always).
As I said, it's a solid story, and it's Australian without being ridiculous about it. It's chock-full of scene-stealing performances, especially from David Wenham as the tragically hilarious Spit. The whole thing feels kind of like a cross between 'Two Hands' and 'Blue Murder'. It's great, watch it cunts.
HIGHLIGHTS: Wenham's courtroom scene is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
LOWPOINT: Gretel Killeen makes an awful cameo.

"Who's gonna pay for me bus fare" is a catch phrase in our house, usually in praise of evil genius masquerading as stupidity.
Wenham alone in the interrogation room. Any scene Wenham is in.
