Jump the Shark
August 24th 2006 04:09
There's a saying that's been slowly seeping it's way into popular culture.
It's called 'Jumping the Shark'.
It refers to an episode of 'Happy Days' where the Fonz jumps over a shark. It's been pinpointed (by a guy called John Hein) as the episode where 'Happy Days' started going downhill.
Enter the website Jump The Shark, where various people debate and figure out the points where each and every TV show 'lost' it.
An example, for me, would be that 'Daria' jumped the shark somewhere around the beginning of Season 3. It was like she went through puberty or something and everyone was suddenly taking about relationships... it competely ruined the whole show! Another example would be 'Red Dwarf', which pretty much jumped the shark the moment co-creator/writer Rob Grant left the show (on screen this can be determined by the introduction of Kochanski as a main character, or in Series 8 when the entire crew of the ship come back to life thanks to nanobots).
The Jump the Shark website has various hilarious categories that apply to a horribly large amount of television shows... there's 'Ted McGinley' syndrome, where actor Ted McGinley turns up in the show as a recurring character - the beginning of the end of many a show. There's also various other factors that often signal the point where the show turns for the worst - 'same character, different actor' (Bewitched, Roseanne), 'a very special episode of...' (Blossom, Mad About You), 'new kid in town' (Family Ties) and 'they did it' (Moonlighting, Friends).
I could read through this site all day, but unfortunately I have to eat and sleep and do stuff like that, so I have to force myself to stop reading it occasionally so I can function like a normal human being.
It just makes me so angry that so many good TV shows fuck themselves up so royally!
Jump the Shark - in case you missed it the first time.

So few shows escape the clutches of white death and a pair of skis.
