New Doctor Who

December 26th 2006 23:46

Well, another Christmas - another Doctor Who Christmas special. Yes, the UK are lucky enough to get a new hour-long Christmas episode of Doctor Who - meanwhile the rest of the world will have to wait a minimum of six months to see it, most likely. Anywayyyyyyy... it's called 'The Runaway Bride' and I could *not* wait. I was so excited - the prospect of seeing a new episode of Doctor Who was (for me) the best thing about Christmas this year, and I almost couldn't contain myself.

It takes place just after that WTF moment from the end of Series 2, with the Doctor saying 'What?' over and over again after discovering Catherine Tate hanging out in the TARDIS in a wedding dress. Cue titles, cue maximum excitement from me.

I'm not going to spoil the episode as I know there are probably people reading this who are yet to see it. I'll just give my opinion in a round-about non-spoilery way. It was an okay episode - not bad, but definitely not as good as last year's 'Christmas Invasion'. At times it was a little bit too camp and flippant for my liking. The Doctor and the Bride made an interesting and entertaining team, and I'll just say - Tennant is getting really good and I think the upcoming series of Doctor Who will see him truly shine in the role and he is going to get more popular than ever.

There are some stunning effects sequences in this episode, some really great action. It's a shame the incidental music is so bad but what are you gonna do? Anyway, I felt sad again after it finished as it now means there's another four month wait until more new Doctor Who. The teaser/trailer for the new season got me all excited again - some of the episodes next year look killer!

Here's some of what we know about the next series (without spoiling anything)...

* The first episode will be called 'Smith and Jones', and will introduce us to the Doctor's new companion, Martha Jones.
* The second episode is called 'The Shakespeare Code' and is reported to be the most expensive episode of Doctor Who ever made, so far. It takes place in the 17th century.
* There will be a two-part episode set in 1930s New York. Some location filming took place.
* There will be a two-part episode set in pre-WW1 England, which might be loosely based on the popular 90s Doctor Who novel 'Human Nature'.
* There will be a stack of new alien races with cool-sounding names like the Judoon, the Plasmavores and the Carrionites.
* Mark Gatiss, of League of Gentlemen fame, will be guest-starring in one of the episodes.

All exciting stuff!

Christmas special? Was there a Christmas special in season one? I haven't finished season two yet, so I know nothing of a wedding dress. I guess the big-toothed blonde is leaving.

The first story with David Tennant as the Doctor was the first Christmas Special, it took place between Seasons one and two. This special I'm talking about takes place after Season 2 and has only gone to air on Christmas day in England just gone.

I just finished season two - it's really going to be 6 months until season 3 hits non-british shores?

I heard that Sarah Jane Smith and K9 are each getting spinoffs. Isn't that a bit excessive?

yes, it's very excessive.

The Sarah-Jane spinoff starts soon (in a week or so I think).

The K9 spinoff is still in development and I'm still not convinced it will happen. Hopefully not, haha.

Yeah Australia probably won't get Season 3 until July.
America probably August or October.

I haven't seen the Runaway Bride yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. I just wanted to stop by and say that I love the Cybermen background!

Thank you Nina! it took a look of tinkering to get this blog finally looking a little less boring.
