Supernova 2006 (with pics)
November 23rd 2006 11:00
A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to go to Supernova 2006 in Sydney. Or should that be, they were fortunate enough to have me there? Anyway, I've never been to any kind of convention of any sort, so this was my first.
It wasn't really what I expected, it was mainly stalls trying to sell stuff. I'm not entirely sure if Supernova is indicative of how sci-fi/geek conventions normally are. There were lots of anime and independent comic book stands, a stand manned by Slimey Things - Australia's only Sci-Fi rock band, a Dominoes Pizza stand (where they charged $4 bucks for one puny slice of pizza!), and various stands manned by Star Wars costuming alliances.
The funnest aspects were the costumes. People were walking around in all sorts of costumes. We also watched the cos-play, which is where the costumed people get up in front of everyone on stage and do a little sketch or something to do with their costume. One guy was dressed in a green and gold Darth Vader suit, complete with corks hanging off his helmet, and he called himself 'Aussie Vader', and he mimed 'Duelling Banjos' in it's entirety. One of my mates was not impressed and he summed the performance up with the comment, "No matter how crap anything anyone else does, it won't be as shit as that". Unfortunately, he was wrong. Some guy later got up and he was dressed as some kind of lion and he revealed that he had dressed up as his own originally-created character and proceeded to do some incredibly bad and garbled stand-up. No one could hear what he was saying, and it went down like the Titanic.
Here's some pics of various people in costumes, note the excessive use of the Barracuda sign on my part.
All pics by Keira Campbell. Thanks Keira!
