The Waterboy

Adam Sandler plays another loser with an exceptional sporting skill (ala ‘Happy Gilmore’), but this time the guy is a full-blown retard, and the film steps even further away from the safe comedy territory trodden by it's predecessors.
Bobby Boucher (Sandler) is the waterboy for a college football team. After the coach decides that Bobby's retardation distracts the team too much Bobby is fired. Bobby soon finds himself employed as the waterboy for the worst team in the comp, and the washed-up coach in charge (Henry Winkler) accidentally discovers that Bobby's pent-up rage makes him an excellent tackler, and hence puts him on the team.
It's fairly formula stuff, and it fits right in with the Happy/Madison set-up. Sandler demonstrates his flair for playing yet another shade of loser, and Fairuza Balk does her 'slutty girl' thing. Henry Winkler and Kathy Bates are surprising if only for their presence, but also manage to pull out some wonderfully comic performances (particularly Winkler, a million miles away from 'The Fonz').
I have to admit that I didn't enjoy this film anywhere near as much the second time around, it just comes off as over-the-top and slightly disturbing. But anyone who's a fan of Sandler will find more than a few chuckles to be had with this film.
TRIVIA: Rob Schneider's line 'You can do it!' seems to be repeated in almost every Sandler film made since, and in at least one Schneider film ('The Animal', where Sandler cameos to deliver the immortal words).

we just watched this film the second time around during the hols....you are right - it looses some of it's appeal during the second round - of course, my hubby and BIL being "guys" still thought the movie was a hoot
