Torchwood - Small Worlds
November 19th 2006 12:16
Last week’s Torchwood featured some spooky faeries… half-seen murderous little buggers that choked their victims to death, leaving their mouth filled with rose-petals. They looked Gollum-esque – green and thoroughly vile – and unfortunately, completely CGI. The idea was cool, the rose petals were a good idea – but I think it could’ve been done better. It should’ve been more over-the-top – rose petals everywhere, like spewed blood hahahaha, and the faeries were okay but I dunno... felt a bit too Buffy and they looked a bit too cartoony.
Of the five episodes of Torchwood so far this has probably been the most interesting. It featured some flashbacks to Jack’s past (throwing up more questions than answers), the aforementioned monster-faeries, and a (SHOCK) paedophile! But… I don’t knowwhere this is all going. The resolution to this episode was unbelievably bad. Torchwood didn’t do anything! Jack and co. spent the whole episode running around chasing these faeries and at the end – nothing. What was the point? Do the writers think people will enjoy watching a show where the heroes achieve absolutely nothing? I really, really, really don’t know where they are going with this show. There has been little character development (aside from Jack and Gwen), there isn’t any driving motivation for the Torchwood team, they don’t really do any investigating, they don't seem at all professional (they seem to answer only to themselves), all the aliens and monsters so far have been pretty poor in either execution or conception... the list goes on and on. I really don’t have high hopes for this show at the moment. I’ve tried to keep an open mind and I want it to succeed but so far it just hasn’t really entertained me.
The first episode was fine… promised some cool stuff. The second episode was pretty crap, but I was willing to excuse it as I figured the show’s writers were so excited at putting sex into the Doctor Who universe that they forgot about other things like being interesting. The third episode was boring, except for maybe the bits where they gave Owen something to do. The fourth episode could’ve been really great, but the Cyberwoman just looked so silly and the character-dynamics between Jack and Ianto felt forced and illogical. And then there's the fifth episode - this episode… evil faeries come and do stuff, Jack gets all excited and chases them around Cardiff to try and find the child they want to steal, faeries get angry, Jack and co. face the faeries in a showdown, Jack and co. can’t actually do anything to the faeries, faeries win. End of episode. What a pile of shit.
I’m hoping they pick up their game soon, we’re almost halfway through the season now!

However I agree the scripts are poor and nearly all the focus is on Jack and Gwen. The episode about the faeries is one-dimensional, the child doesn't come across as anyone you feel any sympathy for even though she is menaced by a paedophile, bullies at school and a step-father who hits her.
